Weed Warrior issues a call to arms

WITH weed infestations a growing problem within the Swan Hill district, one determined local is looking to take charge of the problem once and for all.

Bruce Jones, also known as the ‘Weed Warrior’, said now was the time to take action against local weed outbreaks, as 10 years of drought had combined with the summer rains to intensify the issue.

“A task of this magnitude goes beyond just local government,” he said.

“The only way you can address this issue is to have community involvement — this is quite an oppressive problem.”

To combat the proliferation of weeds in the Swan Hill district, such as the spiny emex, caltrop and khaki weed, Mr Jones has called for community volunteers to assist in spraying local lands.

Volunteers will be given instruction and all the necessary materials to eradicate the weeds, free of charge.

“The problem you’ve got with those weeds is that you have to spray them continually,” Mr Jones said.

“So what we are trying to do is establish a mini-Landcare network within the Swan Hill urban boundary to control and hopefully eradicate these weeds.”
