Just plane fun

HIGH flyers from across Victoria and interstate will converge on Swan Hill for a national radio controlled flying model rally this weekend.

The Australian Electric Flying Association event, which will be hosted by the Swan Hill Model Aero Club (SHMAC) at their club quarters on Blackwire Road, will see model enthusiasts show off their flying skills with electric-powered planes and helicopters.

Many attendees are expected to camp onsite across the weekend, and a raffle will be held during the event to raise funds for the local club.

SHMAC secretary Bruce Myers, who has been flying model aeroplanes for around three years, said the ‘fun-fly’ weekend event usually attracted 60 to 70 flyers.

“It’s a good chance to catch up with old mates and fly around and show off,” he said.

“We’re expecting good weather this weekend, and when the weather is nice there are plenty of people around.”

The Swan Hill club has around 15 members and Mr Meyers said newcomers were always welcome to join the fun

“A lot of people go buy these things and then have to learn how to fly them,” he said.

SHMAC newcomer Jason Benbow bought his first model plane early this year and has been learning to fly with the help of the Swan Hill club.

“It’s just good to be involved in a club,” he said.

“And it’s cheaper than a Harley,” Mr Myers added.

The next event on the Australian Electric Flying Association calendar is a SAM 600 Old Timer event at Cohuna, to take place from November 10 to 11.
