Election aftermath: result a protest against 9a bridge

FALLOUT from the local election campaign is continuing this week, with one successful candidate labelling the result a ‘protest vote’ against a low level lift span bridge known as ‘option 9a’.

Two councillors supportive of 9a remain on council, while the remaining five have indicated a lack of support for the proposal.

Returned Murray Mallee Ward councillor Gary Norton, who voted against 9a in the last term of council, said he believed the election result showed a ‘protest vote’ in Swan Hill against the intermediate height, lift-span bridge known as 9a, which would see traffic enter on Curlewis Street.

“Now it needs political will from state and federal politicians, and they can change the decision on the bridge,” Mr Norton said.

“The only minister signed off on it (the 9a option) is the planning minister, but you can reverse any planning decision,” he said.
