Businessman laments recruitment difficulties

SYD Wilson Auto Electrics owner Darren Scott is not surprised at recent data showing some businesses are suffering in the struggle to find workers.

Mr Scott has been advertising for a fully qualified auto electrician for two to three months and so far has received no suitable applicants.

At first he tried enlisting the help of a job agency for four weeks. “They must feel bad for us because they’ve given us two weeks for free,” he joked.

Widening the search, he advertised in the Age and Herald Sun, but he got more than he bargained for.

“All we get is a plethora of international applicants saying they think they can do the work, but most don’t have the training,” Mr Scott said.

It’s been an ongoing problem that has become worse in the last couple of years, he said.
