High prices, low yields

HIGHER crop prices should slightly offset an overall yield
decrease for this year’s harvest, according to local agricultural
agents.

Agfarm account manager Fabian Devereux estimated this year’s harvest
was likely to be about 10 per cent below average.

“Growers are getting a bit
disappointed” Mr Devereux said.

“Canola is just about done and it’s down
about 30 to 40 per cent on last year… wheat is just starting to come in.”

A
lack of substantial rain was the main cause of the decreased yield, according to
Mr Devereux, but he said the decline was likely to be offset by this year’s
higher grain prices.
