Highway closed

A HIGH-SPEED rear-end collision just north of Swan Hill has left a man seriously injured and closed the Murray Valley Highway for about an hour .

Police said a beige sedan was travelling north from Swan Hill about 12.15pm on Friday, while a silver four-wheel-drive was stopped on the highway preparing to turn into Murraydale Road.

The sedan was written off in the resulting collision, while the four-wheel-drive sustained less damage to its rear.

After police, ambulance, CFA and SES officers attended the scene, the four-wheel-drive’s male driver and two female passengers were conveyed to hospital for observation with minor injuries.

SES assisted with the Jaws of Life to remove parts of the wrecked sedan in an effort to free the male driver.

Ambulance Victoria reported a man about 90 years old was transported from the scene to Swan Hill hospital with chest and head injuries.

While emergency authorities occupied the highway, northbound traffic was diverted into Murrawee Road, while southbound traffic was directed into Murraydale Road.

Both vehicles were towed away and the highway was re-opened about 1pm.
