SWAN Hill residents are still crying out for more child care
places, with governments having pledged action while some parents wait for up to
a year on waiting lists.
Goodstart Early Learning centre director Cassandra
Klabbers said demand was high for her long day care centre with more than 100
people on a waiting list for 35 places.
“We have a lot of people constantly
ringing, seeing if we have had spots opened,” Ms Klabbers said.
“Parents are
desperate to return to work, constantly checking,” she said.
“We suggest
other places around town but they come back and say they’ve tried there. We’re
having the same problem all over town.” Ms Klabbers said the problem had built
over the last couple of years but 2012 had seen the highest demand yet.
She
said the only real solution was more capacity, meaning more childcare centres
and staff.
