PAYIKA College students will fall through the cracks of
Victoria’s education system if a proposal to keep the school running next year
is rejected, the college’s principal has said.
The Koorie Pathways School
will close its doors for the last time as the school year comes to an end on
Friday, following a Government decision to pull funding for the transitional
college project.
The decision to close the three remaining Koorie schools in
Victoria came after an independent review showed they had failed to meet their
goals and were not sustainable, but Payika College principal John Brookshaw said
hope was not yet lost.
He said he hoped to re-open the school as a flexible
learning centre next year, to act as an extension of Swan Hill College with new
administration, and a new structure.
Funding for the proposal is being
sought through the Department of Education, and a decision is expected to be
announced later today.
