Eleventh hour rescue

RENOWNED for stepping in and coming to the aid of others in trying times, the Swan Hill State Emergency Service (SES) has once again lived up to its reputation, saving one of the region’s flagship events.

The volunteer-based group has been praised for its efforts to ensure the final day of the VicSuper Murray Marathon went ahead after one of the marathon’s official safety boats broke down.

The mechanical glitch occurred around 10.30pm on December 30, just prior to the final leg, which was to conclude in Swan Hill the following day.

According to YMCA Victoria general manager Stephen Bendle organisers were facing the “distinct possibility that the last day of the event would have to be cancelled” because of insufficient water safety resources.

“Within an hour the Swan Hill SES had arranged a boat, coxswain and driver so the final day of the Murray Marathon could go ahead,” Mr Bendle said.

“It was a fantastic effort for Swan Hill SES to respond so quickly.

“It is this great community spirit right along the Murray River that makes the Murray Marathon such a special event every year.”

Swan Hill Rural City Councillor and Murray Marathon competitor Greg Cruickshank also commended the local SES unit for their efforts.

“At literally the eleventh hour the Swan Hill SES unit stepped up and quite frankly saved the final leg of the Murray Marathon,” Cr Cruickshank said.

“The Swan Hill SES provided a boat and crew at very short notice.”

Cr Cruickshank said the local volunteers were fine examples of both local SES volunteers and Swan Hill community members.

Swan Hill SES deputy controller Julie Jochs said the SES received the call around 11pm and were able to put measures into place which ensured a boat and two volunteers were in the water by 5am the following day.

Quick to shy away from any praise, Ms Jochs said the local SES unit was happy to offer its assistance to the charity event.

“We don’t volunteer for praise,” Ms Jochs said.

“We’re happy to help if we can.”

The 404km Murray Marathon course is dubbed Australia’s longest paddling event.

Organised by YMCA Victoria, funds raised from the marathon are reinvested into programs within the Murray River communities.
