On patrol for potholes

A SWAN Hill region road safety advocate has endorsed a social media campaign exposing the state’s worst potholes.

RACV’s Pothole Patrol campaign has attracted hundreds of comments, photographs and videos from motorists around the state keen to vent their frustration on Facebook.

Among the roads named on the site are the Calder Highway from Bendigo to Mildura, particularly the section from Charlton to Sea Lake, and roads around Kerang damaged in the 2011 flood event.

Roadsafe Central Murray officer Malcolm Pollitt said potholes were a significant safety risk in the Swan Hill district.

“In regards to when people swerve to avoid them, as well as the damage they do to vehicles,” Mr Pollitt said.

“Especially for things like motorbikes, a pothole can be a disaster.”

Mr Pollitt said extreme weather conditions and budgetary constraints on Vic Roads had created a backlog of repair work around the region.
