Dry conditions lead to increased water usage

DRY weather conditions throughout the district have resulted in higher than
average water use among residential households serviced by Lower Murray Water
(LMW).

According to LMW managing director Ron Leamon water usage within the
LMW urban region has increased by more than two million kilolitres when compared
to the same period last year, with significant increases in Swan Hill and
Kerang.

“Due to the continuing very dry period since July of 2012 we have
seen our urban customers in Swan Hill and Kerang relying solely on our water
supplies as there has essentially been no rain,” Mr Leamon said.

“We have had
higher than average summertime temperatures with one exceptionally hot spell for
an extended period in January this year and this has caused many customers to
water their gardens and put water through their evaporative air conditioners
more often than previous seasons.”

Despite the increase, Mr Leamon said
residents had become more water wise in the last decade.
