SWAN Hill Rural City Council’s new chief executive officer has
said his first mission will be meeting with and listening to the
community.
Dean Miller was in Swan Hill on Friday to meet staff and fine tune
details of his five-year appointment (the maximum term allowable under the Local
Government Act) which begins May 20.
“I met most of the staff, they were all
very welcoming,” Mr Miller said.
Mr Miller leaves his CEO position at
Hindmarsh Shire (about 7500 square kilometres, population about 6000), which he
held for three-and-a-half years for Swan Hill Rural City, about 6000 square
kilometre municipality with a population of 20,000.
The 44-year-old said the
move to the larger council with a different mix of ratepayers was the next
logical step in his career.
“[Hindmarsh Shire] is one of Victoria’s smallest councils, and there was the
opportunity to step up to a larger council,” he said.
“Swan Hill Rural City has a good
blend of urban and rural areas, whereas where I came from was purely rural — the
rural/urban mix appeals to me.”
