Lake salutes again

SEVEN strong fields contested a great day’s racing at the Swan Hill Racecourse on Anzac Day.

Once again it was the legendary Gunbower horseman Jim Lake who took out the main event.

Lake’s horse, De Mars saluted the judge in the Swan Hill Credit Union St Pat’s Cup, narrowly defeating the Darren Wier-trained Some Target.

Both Lake and De Mars, a nine-year-old bay gelding, are showing no signs of slowing down.

The pair took out the Club Barham Kerang Cup three weeks ago.

Rising stars

HARRY Coffey and Jye McNeil are two apprentice jockeys on their way up.

While it was McNeil who claimed the honours on Thursday, piloting three winners at Swan Hill, those following Harry Coffey would have done alright.

The Swan Hill based apprentice finished the day with three third placings and second.

There is a lot to look forward to as these two young riders forge a career in one of Australia’s toughest industries.
