KOONDROOK local Kale Makeham is living his motocross dream as he competes in the pro-lites class of the 2013 Monster Energy Drink MX Nationals.
In his rookie year, Makeham has impressed many with a podium performance in the opening round of the 10 round series and his debut in the pro-lite class.
The second round of the series was held in perfect conditions at Murray Bridge, South Australia on April 28.
Racing two 30-minutes-plus one-lap races (motos) he has placed himself high in the overall points early on in the series, driven by his 2012 under 19s Supercross Championship success.
“Round two went well for me. I had a bit of pressure to back my round one performance up but we were able to keep it really consistent with a fourth and a fifth so it was a successful weekend,” Makeham said last week.
Competing against factory teams, Makeham has been able to tussle with the factory riders on his KTM 2-stroke machine.
The lites class has factory team Serco Yamaha in a happy position leading and running up in the series with riders Luke Styke and Luke Clout.
Makeham is the first privateer and the first KTM overall in the series.
“It’s good to keep it in the top five but once you’ve had a taste of the podium you want more and I’m more determined than ever to get it. We’ll keep working hard and hopefully improve on some areas and make a charge for it in round three,” Makeham said.
Round three of the MX Nationals will be held in Victoria’s Gippsland region at the Wonthaggi circuit.
It is a circuit that has been used for recent Victorian Motocross Championships and been a round of the MX Nationals in previous years.
“We’re sitting third overall in the championship and we’re the top KTM rider so I’m stoked about that, it means a lot to me,” Makeham said.
