SWAN Hill licensed venues and eating providers are willing to
change to accommodate proposed bans on smoking in outdoor dining and drinking
areas.
Almost 200 cancer specialists have written to State Government
demanding that puffing in public eating and drinking areas be banned as soon as
possible.
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Lung Cancer Service chairman
Professor David Ball said a ban would protect diners from secondhand smoke,
which he said kills thousands of people each year globally.
“Every day I have
to tell some Victorians and their families the bad news. With 80-90 per cent of
lung cancers caused by smoking, I witness a lot of suffering that could have
been avoided,” he said.
Swan Hill Club operations manager Steve Banks said
the idea would not be of concern and he believed smokers were in general quite
respectful.
