Road named to honour local history

AFTER months of debate and an influx of community input, a small Koraleigh road
with no name has been given a new identity.

While the original
recommendation put to the Wakool Shire Council at Thursday’s general meeting was
to endorse the name McKenzie Lane, councillor Lois Lockhart moved a second
motion during the meeting that the council support the name Bungunyah Lane as
the most deserving of the street sign.

Bungunyah is an early Aboriginal name
for the Koraleigh area meaning very bendy river, and is also where Nyah took its
name from.

Cr Lockhart said the council’s memorandum of understanding with
the Wamba Wamba community should be respected in the naming of the lane.

“The township was called Bungunyah-Koraleigh for many years and covered an
extensive area,” she told councillors.

“I believe it is the most appropriate
option for our council.”

A unanimous council vote cemented the decision.
