Liberals’ bid for Mallee a “waste of resources”: Truss

NATIONALS leader Warren Truss has criticised the Liberal Party’s bid to contest the seat of Mallee in the upcoming Federal election, labelling the fight a ‘waste of resources’.

Mr Truss made the comments during a visit to Swan Hill on Monday in support of Nationals candidate Andrew Broad.

With several new parties entering the fray in the Mallee this year, the upcoming election is set to be one of the most hotly contested since the Country Party first took control of the seat in the 1940s.

The Victorian arm of the Liberal Party has decided to join the large list of parties contesting the seat, nominating Horsham-born candidate Chris Crewther.

Leader of the Nationals Warren Truss told The Guardian that although he recognised the Liberals had a right to run for the seat, having Coalition partners campaign against one another was not ideal.

“It is my view that it is better if the two parties do not waste resources fighting one another,” Mr Truss said.
