Students ensure a litter free environment

CHILDREN of Swan Hill are throwing their support behind Victoria’s efforts to
remain ‘the nation’s most litter free state’.

As part of Keep Australia
Beautiful (KAB) Week, students at St Mary’s Primary school will be extra
conscientious in binning their rubbish this week.

Swan Hill’s St Mary’s
Primary School principal Paul Bissinella said the school was a strong supporter
of the organisation and believed education on the environment was crucial to
everyone’s knowledge.

“We raise awareness about the week through our
newsletter, that way we try and get the families involved as well so they too
can encourage their children to use rubbish bins,” Mr Bissinella said.

With
programs running throughout the year to promote the environment, Mr Bissinella
said the students had created a reflection garden containing native
plants.

“We’ve taught the students about composting, in each classroom there
is a compost bucket that then goes to our large compost bins,” Mr Bissinella
said.

“We then use this soil to propagate other plants.”Mr Bissinella
said the students took great pride in the environment and their surrounds.
