THE Woorinen Football Club is the reserve premier for 2013 after a 35 point victory over the Cohuna Kangas on Saturday.
Woorinen’s Jason Iannucci was deservedly named best on ground to receive the medal and it was he who set the tone in the first minute to goal and hit the post shortly after.
The Tigers were dominating the clearances early with Blake Ward in the ruck and the bulking presence of Anthony Alderuccio at ground level forging the Tigers forward.
Shannon Treacy was good in defence for the Kangas and it would be through his good work and the around ground running of John McIntyre and Josh Martyn that the Kangas were able to respond with goals to Ryan Holmes and Tom Murray that put the Kangas only three points down at quarter time.
Spectators could see at this early stage that the warm conditions were going to make it a test of fitness.
It would be the second quarter that the Tigers would set up a break in the match, booting five goals to an inaccurate Kangas one goal and two behinds.
Majors to Iannucci and singles to Alderuccio, Brendan Crabbe and Daniel Demaria would see the Tigers take a lead of 25 points to the long break.
Woorinen’s defence were responsible for many scoring thrusts with clever rebounding work from Matt Ahern, Taylor Cameron and Dean Morpeth.
Shaun McIvor was good on the wing for the Kangas as was Steven Spring in defence.
It would be the third quarter where the Kangas would mount a challenge with early goals to Kahn Mason and Martyn and seemed to be full of run.
The Kangas were now winning some clearances where they were soundly beaten, through Lachy Fehring and Jacob Mitchell and it would be Mitchell who goaled to put the Kangas nine points down and it was game on.
But it would be through the class of Iannucci against the run of play to goal from 50 out to bring up his fourth and another to Cameron and the Tigers were able to steady.
The youthful legs of Jye Barry and Jake Butler were critical for the Tigers to stand up and halt the Kangas momentum.
A four goal break at the last change was going to be a big challenge for the Kangas to overcome and although Fehring goaled early for the Kangas the telling ruckwork of Ward would shut the Kangas out as once again Iannucci would rise to kick two goals to make it six for the match and the cup seemed to be heading out to Tigerland.
Joel Woolhouse, Riley Pascoe and Mitchell continued to run the quarter out for the Kangas but the Tigers defence was superb.
At the siren the Tigers had achieved a much deserved 35 point victory and captain/coach Kieran McLaughlin received the silverware much to the pleasure of his charges and band of loyal supporters.
