Special rate debate

THE re-introduction of a special rate which has allowed Swan Hill Incorporated to undertake marketing and business development programs within the region remains uncertain.

The failure to reinstate the rate could see more than $300,000 potentially lost from the organisation’s marketing and promotion budget.

The Swan Hill municipality has had the special rate scheme in place since July 2002.

It was last renewed for a seven year period in 2007.

With the special rate set to expire in June 2014, Swan Hill Incorporated has requested the re-introduction of the rate for a further seven years on rateable commercial, industrial and tourism properties.

However, the proposal was met with strong opposition during Swan Hill Rural City Council’s monthly meeting on Tuesday.
