Stradbroke leapfrogs into fifth spot

STRADBROKE’S win on sets over Curlewis saw it leapfrog over the latter into fifth place on the tennis pennant ladder.

The teams were tied on 94 games each at the end of play, with Stradbroke getting the premiership points on sets — 8 sets to 7.

Stradbroke’s men set up victory, with five wins to Curlewis’ two, and a margin of eight games.

Stuart McGregor, number one for the day, and Alan Thompson, got Stradbroke off well, with an 8-6 win over Max Carroll and Craig Roberts, but Brendan Angus and Ben Lewin struck back straight away for Curlewis, boosting the side to a three game lead.

Stradbroke broke away, with wins to Neil Selleck and Brayden Young, McGregor and Tony Evans, Dwayne Grey and Selleck and Thompson and Young, before Curlewis snared its second win, when Carroll and Angus were successful.

Curlewis had the advantage in the women’s sets, where Louise Angus and Melissa Snyder and Jodi O’Meara and Teagan Mays grabbed the first two sets.

Angus and O’Meara were leading comfortably in the next, when Angus’ suspect calf muscle gave way again, and Stradbroke picked up its only women’s set through substitutes Liz Free and Connie Rovere.

Snyder and Mays won the next, putting Curlewis one game up with the mixed to play.

Roberts and Bec Grey (called in to fill Angus’ place) added three games to the margin for Curlewis, and Ben Lewin and Snyder picked up two more, giving Curlewis a six game lead.

Stradbroke hit back hard, with Selleck and Rovere winning a tie break from Cooper Angus and O’Meara, and Young and Virginia Gleeson made up the final five games in the last set of the day, to see Stradbroke prevail in the closest of close finishes.

In the day’s other ties, McCallum retained top place on the ladder with a 10 game win over Beveridge — which dropped Beveridge from second to fourth — while McCrae had a very comfortable win over Splatt, which was missing three of its prime movers.
