MEMBER for Mallee Andrew Broad has labelled one supermarket giant’s latest
government lobbying efforts a “disgrace”.
The comments follow the
distribution of a letter from Coles to members of parliament informing MPs of
its latest Cost of Living Report.
The report claims “consumer confidence [is]
at an all time low” and that the company has been “bringing prices down since
the start of our turnaround in 2008” — to the advantage of Australian
consumers.
Apparently, this decrease can be seen in a sample basket of
groceries, which would have cost “the average Aussie family” $100 in 2008, to
$96 in 2013 — a change of just $4 across five years.
“Coles’ ‘Down, Down’
campaign has cheapened food in the mind of the consumer,” Mr Broad said.
