NYAH was the toast of Victorian harness racing when the club’s annual pacing cup was announced as Country Cup of the Year earlier this month.
The announcement was made at Harness Racing Victoria’s annual awards function in Melbourne a fortnight ago.
It’s a steep learning curve for new Nyah Harness Racing Club’s Ross Hendy but after taking on the role of secretary six weeks ago — with no previous background in racing — he said he was determined to help the sport flourish in Swan Hill.
“We have the facility here [at the Swan Hill racecourse] that has been operating for 12 months,” he said.
“We need to promote it and grow it.”
Hendy said he hoped to increase the usage of Swan Hill’s newest sporting facility.
“We currently have 12 events here. Ideally we would want to have more,” he said.
Upcoming events include the harness racing club’s Christmas party meet on December 5, with Santa — and gifts — to be on hand, while January 21 will feature a family day with all the usual children’s activities.
