Exceptional cricket

THE standard of cricket was exceptional at Saturday’s Premier Cricket Bush Bash in Swan Hill, despite a disappointing attendance according to Swan Hill District Cricket Association (SHDCA) president Greg Cruickshank.

“Extraordinary cricket was played and it’s a shame the community missed out on that, because people stayed away,” he said.

“I’m disappointed with the Swan Hill cricket community because it was some of the best [standard] cricket in Victoria.”

Cruickshank said he hated “talking negatives” however.

“There were some good scores made, excellent fielding, batting and bowling.”

Among the stand-out performers was state star Jayde Herrick, who was responsible for some “massive sixes” according to Cruickshank.

As well as being of a high standard, results were close.

“Northcote won one game in the last over and lost the second on the very last ball of the day so it was real edge of the seat stuff,” Cruickshank said.

Sunday’s community day was also worthwhile, he said.

“We had 60-plus young kids, from the smallest have-a-go participants to the pathway kids,” Cruickshank said.

“Some of the premier clubs were looking quite keenly at the younger players there and potentially looking at giving out some invitations for them to try out in the future.”

The SHDCA’s first encouragement award was presented to RSL under 14s player Ben Doolan on Sunday. More are planned in coming weeks.
