AMALGAMATION of the Balranald Shire and Wentworth Shire councils was among the
recommendations of a review into NSW local government structures released
yesterday.
The NSW Local Government Review Panel’s final report stated that
significant change was needed in local government arrangements in the state’s
far west.
“Local government in NSW needs a new agenda and a fresh start,” the
report reads.
“Sooner or later amalgamations will have to be part of the
package.”
Eight councils exist in the western region, as well as an
unincorporated area at the Queensland and South Australia border.
Balranald
Shire Council was identified in the report as “urgently [requiring] a revised
long-term asset and financial management plan plus an updated sustainability
assessment”.
