Doreen weaves way to crown

DOREEN Weaver won her second Champion of Champions singles crown at Racecourse on Saturday.

A big crowd saw the Moulamein bowler take on Racecourse’s Fay Smith to vie for the title of the Murray Valley Bowls Division’s best singles performer for 2013/14. Getting off to a strong start, Weaver was able to keep Smith at bay in the early stages and had all the answers despite strong form from her opponent. She eventually went on to win 25/11, but said yesterday the match was tighter than the scores suggested.

“The scores didn’t show close it was,” she said.

Weaver took up the sport in 1998 when the local golf course closed and has played bowls at Moulamein ever since.

She said she had gone in confident of success.

“That’s the only way to go, you have to go out thinking you’re confident,” she said.

She also won the division singles title in 2010/11 and was hopeful of going further this season.

“I can never get through to the next level, so hopefully this time,” she said.

Weaver has enjoyed a good season also winning the division pairs and fours. She plays in Moulamein’s division two Tuesday pennant side which is fourth.

The regional singles will be held in February.
