Grand final’s unexpected feel

SWAN Hill and St Mary’s Tyntynder will battle out arguably the least expected grand final match-up of the summer at the showgrounds tomorrow.

With Swan Hill District Cricket Association force Woorinen missing the finals at the final hurdle and first and second teams RSL and Nyah District being toppled in semi-finals, the 2013/14 two-day grand final has a different feel to it this year.

But while St Mary’s will field a team largely without grand final experience, Swan Hill has spent its share of time out in the middle of deciders — albeit of one-day tournaments.

Most recently, the Swans accounted for RSL to win this summer’s Kookaburra Cup one-day final, and they’ve hardly looked back since.

Nevertheless Swans captain Daniel Cruickshank was putting the mantle of favouritism firmly on St Mary’s yesterday.

“We’re definitely underdogs, they finished third and we finished fourth,” he said.

Cruickshank said his side would go in at full-strength ready for the occasion.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever played in a two-day grand final and we’re a fairly young side, so no one would have played in one before,” he said.

“We’ve been in one day ones in the past, but that’s a bit different.”
