Balranald centre name game

THE newly named Balranald Information Centre may only exist for a month if a motion to rescind the naming of the building is successful.

After months of community consultation, a wide ranging list of more than 70 possible names for the centre was put to council last week, with Balranald Information Centre emerging as the sudden winner in a divided vote.

The classic, if somewhat straightforward, name won out over a host of other creative suggestions, including Bidgee Outback Centre, Heart of Balranald and the presumably tongue-in-cheek Balranald Lemon Centre.

“I think we could have been a bit more adventurous in the name — that is what [the centre] is all about…”

Councillor Ken Barnes voted against the decision, and will put forward a rescission motion at next month’s council meeting.

Cr Barnes said the name did not distinguish the centre and that it should be “something with a bit of substance”.

“It’s going back on the table at the next council meeting, so hopefully we can get a better name than ‘information centre’,” he said.

“I think we could have been a bit more adventurous in the name — that is what [the centre] is all about.

“We have the rivers and it is a very old town, so there is a bit of history to be discovered.”

He will propose naming the centre Balranald Discovery Centre and is “confident” the motion will be supported.
