WHILE most eight-year-old boys think of ways to play with trucks, lego and toys, Swan Hill Primary School student Jonah Devlin has taken some time to think about how he can help others.
Being the active eight-year-old boy he is, Jonah spoke to his mum Erin about how he could raise money for children who can’t be as active as he can be.
He originally wanted to raise money for a hospital, but after discussing the idea, he and his family chose to do something for Make-A-Wish Australia.
His immediate thought was to hold a 24-hour tennis match.
“We were watching something on TV and that sparked the idea,” Erin said.
“He came up with the idea to play tennis all night.
“Jonah’s love of his life is tennis, he plays three to four times a week before and after school.”
Erin said helping others was something of a family trait.
Jonah’s grandparents are volunteers, and Erin holds an annual event to raise money for cancer.
“He is very aware of fundraisers, it is pretty big in our family,” Erin said.
Jonah said he came up with the idea of the tennis match because he “loves tennis” and wanted to “raise money for kids”.
“My nanna volunteers for the Make-A-Wish, she is a wish granter,” he said.
“I’m really excited.”
The 24-Hour Tennis Marathon will be held on April 26 and 27 at the Devlins’ home.
Erin said they had already received an overwhelming amount of support, which may even see the event held at the local tennis court next year, as well as in Melbourne.
“Jonah first said he wanted to raise $1000, but I think it may be more something like $3000 or $4000 that we might raise,” she said.
A sausage sizzle will be held, and egg and bacon rolls will be on offer for breakfast, as well as fresh fruit and snacks.
Anyone who is interested in donating food for the day or attending the match can contact Erin on 0400 555 368.
“People can give money to Make-A-Wish or call my mum,” Jonah said. “We need some food to keep the players going, or give us items to sell or auction.”
