Woorinen on the winners’ list

WOORINEN opened its new season on the winners’ list after holding off a gallant Tyntynder by five goals.

The Tigers overcame a 12-8 quarter-time deficit on the back of some mid-court ascendancy topped by the attacking work of Olivia Jones and Annie Steicke.

Teenager Jones, who has progressed to a permanent member of the A-grade line-up from the junior ranks, impressed at goal attack, scoring 15 goals.

Goal shooter Steicke proved a thorn in the Bulldogs’ side, nailing 28 goals, but had to share the game’s top-scoring honours with her Tyntynder counterpart Kate Morrison.

Morrison produced some outstanding shooting at times in her 28-goal haul, with Tess Denham (10 goals) contributing the rest of the Bulldogs’ score.

Following a bright start where they led by four goals at the first break, Tyntynder struggled for fluency in the second stanza as the Tigers produced a 14-5 term to skip to a five-goal halftime lead.

Tyntynder cut the gap back to three at the final change, but the Tigers rallied when it counted to prevail much to the delight of coach Naomi Lewis.

“We’re really happy to start off with a win,” Lewis said.

“The girls gelled really well and it was a pleasing performance to come back from being behind early to get a good win on the board.”

Centre Ashlee Donnan and Rachel Morton were other impressive contributors for the Tigers.

The Bulldogs’ best was centre Matika Howard, while goal defence Madeleine Jeans and Morrison also played well.
