All about family

NUMBERS might not be what they once were but Murrabit’s Easter tennis tournament remains a tradition for a number of local families with fond memories of the past.

Mandie Harvey’s involvement with the event dates back to 1981 when she and cousin Michelle Noonan decided to enter the tournament for the first time.

“From that first moment we played at Murrabit we found the atmosphere so relaxed and the people so friendly,” she said.

The tradition quickly grew and has only been interrupted by pregnancy during the 1990s.

“We’ve played every year since 1981, apart from a couple of Easters when we were having babies during the 1990s,” Harvey said.

Back in the 1980s and 90s, numbers would often see some matches relegated to the footy oval with the club setting up makeshift courts on the ground to accommodate a growing event.

“The tournament grew and everyone raved about what a good event it was,” Harvey said.

She said the event always catered for all ability levels and promoted a family atmosphere.

“After having families Michelle and I brought our kids to each tournament,” Harvey said.

“There was always a friend or family member there to babysit.”

And, perhaps predictably, it wasn’t long before the children were wanting to have a hit.

“They partnered up with their numerous cousins who were also involved,” Harvey said.

For many the event became an annual back-to and while matches were won and lost, it was family and community that brought everyone back.

“The numbers have dwindled, and entries have dropped off due to other commitments, more tournaments in the area and maybe lack of interest,” Harvey said.

“We hope the event continues for a few more years yet though, so we can continue our tradition.”
