Busy Easter regatta on Boga

THERE was plenty of action on Lake Boga over the Easter long weekend.

Nearly 90 boats took to the water for the local yacht club’s regatta, with F18 and Cobra catamarans holding their state titles within the event.

Lake Boga Yacht Club’s Gary Johnstone said conditions were mostly perfect for sailing, with wind up every day except for Sunday.

And with competitors converging on the region from Queensland, Adelaide and across Victoria the standard of racing was also strong, he said.

“We had some really good sailors there,” Johnstone said.

Among them were McCrae’s Guy Vancroft who was the senior regatta champion and Harrison Sly from Sandringham, his junior counterpart.

Port Melbourne’s Chris Boag and Tom Salt won the F18 state title, while the Parkdale’s Rick Nixon won the Cobra crown.

The championship categories were held over 11 races for the weekend, while other categories sailed six.

But while Johnstone and other Lake Boga Yacht Club members are themselves keen sailors, the passion took a backseat for administration this week.

“None of the locals sailed, we are all too busy working,” Johnstone said.
