DESPITE handing out almost 200 tickets, police from Swan Hill’s traffic management unit say they are pleased with the general behaviour of motorists over the Easter break.
Senior Constable Wayne Cook said while there were a few minor collisions, there was no serious carnage on the region’s roads.
He said of the 199 offences detected, only eight were for drink-driving.
“Considering we carried out 5038 preliminary breath tests, that is a pretty good outcome.”
Snr Const Cook said highway patrol had a “very obvious” presence from Thursday through to Monday, with at least two cars on the roads per shift.
“Over the last two days we were running automatic number plate recognition in Charlton and Swan Hill.
“We found a lot of people are still driving unregistered cars and driving without a licence.”
He said despite the offences detected by police, officers felt the general behaviour of motorists was “quite good”.
“Some drivers are still showing disregard for the law … but we are carrying out high-presence policing these days.”
The Easter campaign was made up of two operations — Operation Soteria and Operation Crossroads — that were being carried out across Australia.
The second stage of Operation Soteria begins again today and will continue through the Anzac Day weekend.
Meanwhile, Senior Sergeant Kathy Zierk said it was an unusually quiet weekend for general crime in Swan Hill.
