Carnival time

PLENTY of first-timers are expected to join the long-time regulars at the Swan Hill Bowls Club’s May Carnival starting tomorrow.

It’s the 48th edition of the iconic local bowls event and entries are as strong as ever.

“Entries this year are the best I’ve ever had,” tournament secretary Bill King said.

It’s his 15th year in the job and King said running the event was as busy as ever.

“Everybody has to put in for it to work,” he said.

“Lynda [King] in the kitchen, Phillip [Jennings] with the greens.”

Just a few spots remain on some days of the first week for those still planning to enter the two-week event.

But beware — draws are done the night before, meaning same-day entry is not possible.

King said the event was like an annual reunion with bowlers coming from across the state to play.

“It’s all about the fellowship of coming back and meeting one another again,” he said.

“It’s known as the friendly carnival.”
