Maroons take the points

Maroons def Lions

NULLAWIL made the longest trip in country football on the weekend and returned as the only remaining undefeated side in the Golden Rivers Football League.

The Maroons defeated Hay by 79 points to take their record to 3-0, but it was the closest margin between the two sides in a number of years.

Hay went into the game missing key tall forward Justin Ellis with a leg injury, as well as young talent Ned Mabon.

The Lions were led by Simon Bunyan who marshalled his young midfield to get on top of their more fancied opponents.

The Maroons lacked a little intensity although Matt Harrop was pivotal in the middle helping the visitors to a three point quarter time lead.

Nullawil bombarded its forward 50 with entries early in the second through the clearance work of Daniel Watts and the tap work of Aaron Kielgardie.

These two worked together to get the ball down to Sean Bedggood who managed four goals in succession, breaking the game open for the Maroons and giving them some vital breathing space.

The third quarter saw Nullawil continue to build its ascendancy as it swung Brett Barker to centre half-forward with vital impact on the game.

Royce Free was also lively down forward, creating several opportunities, however the Maroons weren’t able to make the most of them. When the Lions went forward Bill Auldist looked a capable target, though the forward entries were few and far between.

Watts, Heslop and Kyle Doran were able to provide plenty of drive and rebound to ensure that the Lions were not able to score, ensuring the three-quarter time margin had stretched to 49 points.

The Maroons continued to pile on the misery for the hosts in the last quarter as the sting was really taken out of the game.

The Lions showed a lot of promise and the scoreline probably didn’t indicate the intensity of the contest.

They tried hard but just lacked the class and polish that the Maroons had with ball in hand.

Roos def Bombers

ULTIMA has moved into the top four thanks to a 28-point win over Wandella.

The Roos booted five consecutive goals from early in the second quarter until early in the third, setting up their second win of the season.

Jarrod Rogers finished with five goals for the victors, with Callaghan Gray the sole multiple goal-kicker for the Bombers.

O’Toole and Pay were best on ground for Ultima, with Dillon Treacy, Daniel Baker and Anderson putting in strong performances for the Bombers.

Hawks def Tigers

A SECOND-HALF revival was not enough to prevent Macorna from losing its first game of the season.

The Tigers lost to reigning premiers Wakool by four points, with inaccuracy in front of goal costing Leon Opie’s men their fourth consecutive win of the season.

Luke Kirkland continued his dominance in front of goal for the Hawks, kicking five goals to take his total to 23 from four matches.

Blues def Swans

A 10-GOAL opening quarter set up Murrabit’s first win of the season.

The Blues defeated Moulamein by 69 points — leaving the Swans as the only team in the competition yet to record a win this season.
