Hawks gain an advantage

WAKOOL gained a critical one-win advantage over the sides battling for fourth on the ladder, defeating Wandella by 15 points.

The victory was the Hawks’ first at the Bombers’ home ground since 2006, with the loss seeing Wandella drop to fifth on the ladder.

Straight kicking helped the reigning premiers in the first quarter, with Wakool holding a nine-point lead at the first change.

The Bombers used their home ground advantage in the second quarter, consolidating the benefit of having the breeze to cut the margin back to three points at half-time.

The Hawks kicked five goals to three in the third quarter to go into the final break 14 points up, with the teams unable to be split in the last 15 minutes of the game.

Luke Kirkland kicked five goals for the victors, with Conlan Gunn booting three goals in the club’s seventh win of the season.

Blake Anderson (four) and Justin Robinson (three) were the Bombers’ leading targets in front of goal.

Matt Sparey continued his current vein of positive form for the Hawks, with Gunn and Sean Solar amongst Wakool’s best players.

Lachie Bott, Joel Osbrough and Callaghan Gray were major players for Wandella.

Wakool can add another game between itself and fourth spot on the ladder with a win against Macorna on Saturday, with Wandella to travel to Ultima.
