Nyah West calling

THE fairways at Nyah West are calling the region’s golfers for the Northern District association’s championships over the next few days.

The sandscrape club’s annual tournament will include the Northern District ladies championship tomorrow and men’s titles on Sunday.

Bothe association events will be an 18-hole stroke day, with about 40 ladies and 60 men expected to enter.

Nyah West club secretary Graham Muir said members had taken care of “all the little housekeeping jobs” prior to the tournaments.

“Preparing the grounds is a pretty big job,” he said.

Muir said the club only had access to water for the tees, with Mother Nature responsible for the rest of the course.

He said the club, like others in the region, had been lucky this year.

“We’ve been fortunate this year to get some rain. The last few years, the seasonal conditions haven’t been as kind,” Muir said.

Muir said he hoped golfers from the association’s other clubs — Cohuna, Barham, Murray Downs, Tooleybuc, Kerang, Lalbert, Quambatook, Pyramid Hill, Lakeside and Murrabit — would enjoy the conditions.

“It’s an honour to be asked to host the event. We find visitors are usually rapt in the natural aspect of the course, being natural bush,” he said.

Muir said the layout was quite challenging as well as being picturesque.

The ladies will tee off at 10.30 am on Thursday, with entries closing at 9.45am on the day.

Early entries — by telephone to Cheryl Muir 5030 2518 or Janet Brauer 5030 2816 — would be appreciated by organisers. To play, your GolfLink card must be produced.

On the Saturday there will be a 2 person mixed Pinehurst event with tee off time 12.15pm. Entries close at 11.45am, and again early entries phoned through will assist.

Sunday will be a 27-hole four-ball against-par as the annual tournament event, and the 18-hole stroke sandscrape championship event also played in the afternoon, in conjunction with the par event.

Breakfast will be available from 8am.

Entries for the morning’s nine holes par event close at 8.45am for a 9.15am tee off, and entries for both the afternoon events close at 11.30am.

Post entries by telephone are very important please, to Ian Brauer 5030 2816 or Graham Muir 5030 2518. Again, GolfLink cards must be produced on the day.
