Lucky escape for truck passengers
A VEHICLE involved in a fatal accident at Lake Boga on Tuesday morning was towing a trailer with animals on board.
The trailer flipped on to its side during the accident. Police said at least two dogs died.
There were dogs, cats and guinea pigs on board the trailer, on their way to rescue groups in Melbourne.
On Wednesday morning, two of the dogs were being treated by Swan Hill vets and there were fears for three missing dogs.
Two of the dogs were found mid Wednesday morning, but there was still one missing — a male staffy-labrador cross.
Swan Hill Rural City Council officers were called in to attend to the animals in the immediate aftermath of the accident.
“One dog had to be put down as a result of injuries and other dogs are being assessed by vets,” public health and regulatory services co-ordinator Melanie Bennett said.
“We are now working with rescue groups to ensure the remaining animals — including dogs, cats and guinea pigs — are sent to their intended destinations.”
Sweet Shepherd Rescue Australia, a Victoria based organisation specialising in the rescue of German shepherd dogs, said on Facebook that the dogs were bound for Melbourne.
“Three very sick pups are fighting for life at the vets right now — two with large head injuries,” they wrote.
“Sweet Shepherd rescue are donating towards the vet bill and hope that all our followers can find it in their hearts to do the same.”
A call for donations was put out by National Animal Rescue Groups of Australia toward the cost of vet bills for the injured dogs.
“There has been a tragic accident in Lake Boga involving a dog trailer carrying rescue pets,” a post on the group’s Facebook page read.
“Sadly some had to be put to sleep at the scene, three dogs are in vet care with Swan Hill Veterinary Clinic.
“Two have head injuries and will require a lot of vet work.”
