Man dies in Lake Boga crash

Dogs caught up in crash

KERANG’s Donald Kelly was one of the passengers in the truck involved in yesterday’s fatal accident at Lake Boga.

He sustained minor injuries in the collision, while the man driving the truck was taken to hospital with serious injuries. A five-year-old boy, who was also a passenger in the truck, was unharmed. The driver of a white Falcon involved in the crash died at the scene.

Mr Kelly said they had been heading to the Mallee Machinery Field Days when the accident occurred.

“[The Falcon] crossed the white line and hit us on the front right-hand side,” he said.

“It pushed the front wheel in and then we lost control — we couldn’t do anything but steer where the truck wanted to go — [the driver’s] leg must have been pinned because he couldn’t brake.

“Once the car hit us, we veered off the road and hit [the Nissan Patrol].

“It is a good thing we all had our seatbelts on. I rang triple zero straight away.”

He described the accident as “scary”.

“It was scary, the unknown,” he said.

“I didn’t know if I was going to live or die until the vehicle stopped moving.”

Lake Boga resident Dennis Murray was at home when the accident occurred and rushed to the scene after hearing the crash.

“You know when you hear tip trucks coming across the rail tracks and hear a ‘boom, boom’ — that is what it sounded like,” Mr Murray said.

“I thought it was a tipper, but no-one came by… so I went for a look and that was when I saw this mess.”
