Cause of fatal crash remains unclear

THE leading investigator in last week’s fatal crash at Lake Boga says police may never find out what caused 79-year-old Kerang man Alan Webb to veer on to the wrong side of the road.

Mr Webb was fatally injured when his car travelled into the path of an oncoming truck on the Murray Valley Highway on Tuesday morning. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he died at the scene.

The 50-year-old Kerang truck driver remains in the Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition, while his passengers — a 48-year-old man and a five-year-old boy also from Kerang — escaped with minor injuries.

A third motorist from Adelaide involved in the crash suffered minor injuries, however, several dogs being towed behind his 4WD were killed and seriously injured.

Swan Hill Police Leading Senior Constable Nick Probyn said while investigations into the accident were continuing, it was unlikely police would be able to determine the reason Mr Webb travelled on to the wrong side of the highway.

“I know there was a dog in the car at the time… but it appears it could’ve been just a moment of inattention,” he said.

“It could be just one of those tragic things that happen without rhyme or reason.”

Mr Webb was a well-known and respected member of the local community who worked at the Swan Hill Abattoirs for many years.

He is survived by wife Joan, two children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Snr Const Probyn said police were yet to meet with the grief-stricken family in relation to the accident.
