BELOVED local restaurant Spoons has been purchased by Murray Downs Golf and Country Club.
The club’s board of nine was unanimous in its decision to take on the business — which had been on the market for more than 12 months — for an undisclosed sum.
Club president Bill Gurnett said it was an exciting step for the organisation, following on from their purchase of the Swan Hill Club.
Mr Gurnett said the restaurant’s popular format would be retained and a manager employed to oversee the business on their behalf — as they did for the Swan Hill Club.
It is a move the president said would ensure continued “protection” of their members in a volatile economic climate.
“The board decided [the purchase] was a good opportunity and one that fell within what we do, specialising in the food and beverage industry,” Mr Gurnett said.
“Revenue from gaming is reducing. It will always be our major source of revenue but we need to identify alternative sources of income.”
Spoons, located at Horseshoe Bend overlooking the Murray River, will retain its current profile as a tourist hot-spot specialising in an up-market dining experience.
“It will continue to run as a separate identity and continue to operate in exactly the same way, producing what you would call up-market food,” Mr Gurnett said.
“Patrons won’t notice any difference.”
Staff currently employed by the restaurant will also be retained.
