Vets’ sacrifice commemorated

THE Central Murray Football Netball League paused to commemorate the sacrifice of Australia’s Vietnam War veterans at the weekend.

A minute’s silence was held at game across the league, while Woorinen’s Matt Iannucci was awarded the best on ground medal for the league’s commemoration game at Nyah.

Results marked the settling of the top five, with only their final order to be decided when the Tigers host Swan Hill next week.

The winner will head to the qualifying final to take on Tooleybuc Manangatang while, for the loser, Cohuna awaits in the 2014 elimination final.

The Mallee Eagles loss to Kerang put paid to hopes of the Eagles soaring into this year’s finals series.

The league’s best and fairest votes — to be revealed at the Swan Hill Town Hall on September 15 — are almost settled too, with only Round 18’s votes to be decided.

The Guardian’s LJ Hooker Player of the Year award has five games to go too, but a champion ruckman can’t be knocked from his perch.

Big Saint Ryan O’Sullivan has polled heavily in the second half of the year to lead by an unassailable four votes from Woorinen’s Ben Heenan with one round to go.

Fifteen of O’Sullivan’s 20 votes came in a purple patch between Round 11 and Round 16.

Balranald’s Dane Fitzgerald is tied with Eagle Warren Carlyle on 15 votes, while Kerang’s Luke Cotchett is two back on 13.

Swan Hill’s Xavier Moloney and Hugh Foott; and Saint Stephen Lyons and Kanga Angus Grigg are all tied on 12 votes.
