WOORINEN and Cohuna claimed the Central Murray Football Netball League’s junior premierships in close games on Saturday.
Under 16s
AFTER splitting the regular season games 1-1, Woorinen and Tyntynder fought out a classic grand final with the Tigers getting up in a tense finish.
Tigers spearhead Jose Miliado didn’t disappoint, scoring a crucial double — taking his season tally to 39 — in a low-scoring game.
Darren Rushton has also been a key for the Tigers this season with 33 majors, and on grand final day he also kicked a couple.
Four other Tigers managed goals to take Woorinen’s tally to eight.
League leading goal scorer Kayle Kirby (60) managed a couple for the Dogs, as did Adam Hendy, but their six goal tally wasn’t enough to get past Woorinen.
It was an exciting win for the Tigers who had to plot to turnaround a three-goal second semi-final loss to the Dogs.
A number of Tigers stood up to be counted on the day, including Zac Ryan, Miliado, Zac Cattlin, Lochie Gardner, Austin McKerrow and Jack Raudino.
Lachlan Howe, Tom Sala, Jasper Fruend, Patrick Crowe, Hendy and Jack Hickmott all battled hard for the Bulldogs.
Under 14s
COHUNA turned the tables on Balranald in Saturday’s decider.
After being smashed by the Roos in Round 6 at Greenham Park, the Kangas edged closer over the next two contests, losing a tight Round 17 encounter at Cohuna and a close second semi-final at Woorinen.
The competition’s third-placed team then pounced on the minor premier on grand final day, upsetting Balranald in the 7.5 (47) to 5.7 (37) encounter.
Balranald led by two points at quarter-time but a decisive two-goal second term saw the Kangas edge in front, where they remained.
Loui Gervasi and Drew Lloyd each chimed in with doubles for Balranald, but the Roos were troubled by having fewer avenues to goal than the Kangas with Logan Fitzgerald’s goal being Balranald’s only other major.
Riley Hird also managed two, with Cohuna scoring five other goals from singles.
The Kangas were well served by Jack Williams, Oscar McGraw, Jack Donat, Tom Wight, Ethan Webb and Hird.
For Balranald, Lincoln Sieben, Harrison Soraggi, Edward Pout, Lloyd, Gervasi and Fitzgerald worked hard all day.
