Lifting interest in Swan Hill

A NEW sport is powering its way to Swan Hill.

The Mildura Powerlifting Club is hosting a powerlifting and bench press competition at the leisure centre on October 11, with a view to forming the town’s first powerlifting club on the back of the event.

MPC spokesperson Joel Ridings said the Murray River Challenge would be the first of its kind in Swan Hill, with competition for men and women.

“All ages will be represented with many master athletes participating,” he said.

Ridings said MPC was expecting about 20-30 competitors for the event, including Swan Hill local and long-time powerlifter Darrel Saul who’s idea it was to bring the event to Swan Hill.

“Lifters will be coming from SA and all around country Victoria — including Ballarat, Bendigo, Mildura and Albury,” he said.

Powerlifting is a sport comprising of three lifts — the squat, bench press and the deadlift. Competitors participating in all three lifts will have their placing determined by the total of the three lifts.

Athletes can choose to enter the bench press-only competition

Entries are still open for the event. Anybody interested in participating should visit the Mildura Powerlifting Club’s Facebook page for details on how to enter.
