NATURAL gas is on its way to the region.
An $85 million project, announced on Tuesday in Swan Hill by Deputy Premier Peter Ryan, will see reticulated natural gas supplied to 11 regional towns, including Swan Hill, Robinvale and Kerang, via a “virtual pipeline”.
With installation of a gas pipeline deemed too expensive for this area, a unique system where the gas is trucked to a delivery point on the outskirts of town and then distributed via pipelines will be used.
The communities will be connected under an agreement with the successful tender for the project, Brookfield Infrastructure Group.
Work in Swan Hill is expected to start by the end of next year and take about 12 months to complete.
It is unclear how long Robinvale and Kerang will have to wait to be connected.
