Swan Hill takes on top spot

SWAN Hill continued its great start to the year, with a two rinks and 10 shots win over Murray Downs to move to the top of the ladder. 

Phil Jennings grabbed an eight shot win for Swan Hill, and the stars for the day were Tony Marsili, Barry Husson, Grumpy Smith and Peter Hutchinson, who won 27-19. 

The best for Murray Downs were Spruker Cahoon, Graeme Cox, Mick McLean and John Alderuccio with a 23-19 win.

Racecourse won two rinks and finished 19 shots up over Tooleybuc at the end of play. 

Glen Evans, Kevin Rowe, Ray Halligan and Greg Schack set up the win for Racecourse, winning 29-14, and Lindsay Ryan won his rink 23-17. 

Allan Marshman, John Armstrong, Darren Cross and Robert Jager were in great form for Tooleybuc, winning 23-21.

Lake Boga bounced back to winning form, taking all three rinks and 25 shots over Balranald. 

Lake Boga’s best were Brian Carty, Mick Tempini, Harry Stirling and Neil Cockfield on 33-21. 

Wayne Wright won 25-19 and Ken Hamill won 24-17. 

The best for Balranald were Geoff Harper, Lloyd Murray, Ray Wilson and Kevin Murphy. 

Nyah District and Moulamein shared the rinks on Saturday winning one each and drawing the third, but Nyah, thanks to Bryan Smith, Rod Lusty, Brendan Thomson and Keith Burrage, scored a mammoth 45-10 victory. 

Terry Pearse and Greg Scandolera played out a 20-20 draw, while Wayne Clarke, Bruce MacDonald, Dylan Jack Weaver and Rob Weaver were 22-21 winners for Moulamein.

Division 2

THIS was a great game played under lights on Thursday night. Manangatang won two rinks but went down by 15 shots. 

Ivan McPherson, Lindsay Plant, Bryan Templeton and Rob Morris were Manangatang’s best, winning 28-18, and Keith Mowat won his rink 26-22. 

The match winners for Racecourse were Bert Spencer, Greg Walker, Ang Pheng and Tony Aiello in a mighty 43-14 effort.

Racecourse 2 had to fight hard, before winning all rinks and by a margin of 17 shots over Swan Hill. 

Brian Quaife battled hard to win 27-23, Arthur Threadgold won 26-24, and the big winners were Noel Hender, Graeme Bennett, Bill Schmidt and David Condy on 30-19. 

Swan Hill’s best were Graeme Andrews, Geoff Bingham, Ted Cadwallader and Ken Grey.

In the grudge match at Murray Downs it proved to be no match, with Murray Downs 2 winning all rinks and by 52 shots. All played well for Team 2.

Lake Boga won on a forfeit from Moulamein.

Division 3

FOR the second week in a row, Nyah has won two rinks but lost the match, by three shots this time to Murray Downs 5. 

Val Pearce, Jeff Wynne, Betty Bailey and Daniel Wynne did their bit with a 31-13 win for Nyah, and Graham Muir won his rink 22-20. 

Jean McAlpine, Brenda Monk, Bill McCartney and Joe Sapuppo were the match winners for Murray Downs 5, winning 37-14, to give their side a three shot win.

Murray Downs 4 had a comfortable two rinks and eight shots win over Swan Hill 4. 

Teresa Furnell, Di Martin, Neil Brown and John Meyers had the biggest win for Murray Downs on 28-17, and Fay Merritt won 23-15. 

The best for Swan Hill was John Edlin’s rink, which won 29-18. 

Racecourse 4 won one rink, drew one, and lost one, but finished 11 shots up on Lake Boga. 

Trevor Wiseman, Roy Jones, Jim Wilcox and Ros Schack were the winners for Racecourse, with a 28-13 win, while Ray Bedggood and Trevor Crowe played out a draw. 

Allan Treble, Alec Jobling, Marj Bradley and Jill Pye had a narrow win for Lake Boga on 23-19.

Swan Hill 3 only won one rink, but still managed a 13 shot win over Balranald. 

The winners for Swan Hill were Leo Rowlands, Keith Nield, Esther Grey and Kevin Sibley, with a great 32-13 result. 

The best for Balranald were Peter Golding, Gerard Butler, Corey Bennett and Russell Hobby on 23-19. 

Lance Howley won 21-19, but Balranald couldn’t catch up.

Manangatang played well under lights on Thursday winning all rinks and by 19 shots. 

Shirley Taylor, Ron Smith, Andrew Williams and Tim Budde were the best for Manangatang, winning 24-15, Hugh Walker won 24-21 and Mary Atkins won 26-19. 

Racecourse 5’s best were Brian Warren, Trevor O’Shannessy, Rob Rust and Maureen McKean.

Tooleybuc only won one rink and drew one, but finished 20 shots up on Racecourse 6. 

Ian lockhart’s rink were the match winners for Tooleybuc, getting up 37-12. 

Kevin Saville and Fay Smith finished level on 19-19. The best for Racecourse were Barb Beckwith, Mary Hooper, Ian Lawry and Kaye Elford with a narrow 29-24 win.

The final of the 60 and over men’s singles will be played at 10am on Wednesday at the Racecourse Bowls Club between Mick Tempini of Lake Boga and Peter Furnell from Murray Downs.
