CANOEING down the Murray isn’t an easy task at the best of times, but when you’re covering just over 400km of it in only five days it might feel like you’re up a river without a paddle.
This is the task waiting ahead for Greg Roberts and Dwayne Grey as they look to tackle the YMCA Massive Murray Paddle challenge, regarded as one of the world’s longest paddling marathons, between November 24 and 28.
What makes this task all the more impressive is the fact that both men are not your typical canoe paddlers — instead they’re heads of two community clubs, with little experience in canoeing.
“We’re both aware that we’re in for some pain,” said Mr Roberts, CEO of both the Swan Hill Club and Murray Downs Golf and Country Club.
“We know it’s going to hurt.”
Yet he maintained that neither of the two were nervous – in fact, they were looking forward to it.
