Flyers’ Shepparton test

AFTER four grand final wins at the Horsham Junior Tournament last month, Swan Hill Basketball Association is hoping for another big weekend at Shepparton tomorrow and Sunday.

All eight Flyers teams will go over to the state’s east, with the girls’ Under 14s, 16s and 18s, and the boys’ Under 14s team all looking at defending premierships.

Under 14 girls coach Danny Gardner said the results had been pleasing for the association and it was hoped the squads would step up to a higher level of competition this weekend.

He said some sides would benefit from going up to Division 1 after the strong Division 2 results.

“We’ll see how we go at the end of the weekend. It might be too big a step up but we’ll see,” Gardner said.

“The Shepparton tournament is a lot bigger, so we’re expecting a lot stronger competition.”

Gardner said the experience would be important regardless of the result.

“I want them to get that experience and get their skills better and get them playing better basketball, rather than just have them win,” he said.

For the Horsham results see Friday’s paper (December 5, 2014).
