TOOLEYBUC Central School boasts the region’s newest national champion.
Rising star Emma Berg confirmed her status as an athlete to watch for the future, when she won the Under 14 girls’ discus and shot put titles at last weekend’s Australian All Schools Championships in Adelaide.
A throw of 12.45m won her the shot put crown, while a personal best effort of 39.86m saw her named Australia’s best female discus thrower for her age.
Berg qualified for the national competition at the New South Wales championships in Sydney in October, where she won the discus event and finished second in shot put.
After qualifying two years ago for the equivalent primary school event, where she finished sixth in the discus, Berg said she was happy with her first-time performance at the national all-schools carnival.
“It was pretty good. I felt that I had a chance [going in],” she said.
“They were pretty high throws.”
