Stop! We want a bus shelter!

BUS shelters are set to be built at selected stops in Swan Hill, although it is unclear when installation will take place.

A report into bus shelters in Swan Hill was presented to Swan Hill Rural City Council councillors at the December meeting, recommending a project to install shelters be referred to the 2015/16 Major Projects Plan.

In the past, with a private bus company running along a route set out by Public Transport Victoria and the stops themselves to be built on council land, consensus on who should fund the bus shelters has been difficult to reach.

The report outlined the shelters could cost anywhere from $9950 to $19,750 to purchase and deliver, plus installation of between $2500 and $3500.

In a survey of bus drivers, Campbell Street, McCrae Street and Coronation Avenue near the cemetery entrance were highlighted among nine stops most in need of shelters.

One new stop on Werril Street near the Murray Valley Highway intersection was suggested, while a stop on Naretha Street was recommended for removal — located in Federal Square near a railway line and intersection, drivers said it was unsafe for a bus to be stopped for pick-up.

Councillors voted to refer the installation to the 2015/16 Major Projects Plan.
